True Blood Drinks & Bites

Just in time for Sunday's premiere of True Blood, those crazy fangers are at it again with a second (!) volume of recipes from Bon Temps with True Blood Drinks & Bites. Like its predecessor, this is a lavish full-color, hardcover book (in digest size this time) featuring photos and quotes from the show – alongside cocktail and appetizer recipes that look pretty simple and crowd-pleasing. The cocktails feature hipster-approved booze like St. Germain elderflower liqueur, Campari, Lillet Red Vermouth, Chartreuse, Moonshine/Rye Whiskey and an array of bitters, yet there's enough sweetness to please any Southerner. I'm trying the Faerie Blood (a mix of sweet elderflower liqueur and rosé wine), Redhead Refresher (a hibiscus mint tea), and Lou Pine's Special (a ginger beer and blood orange juice concoction). As for the bites, there's some standard fare (Arti-choked-to-death Dip), some fun refinements (Friggin' Pigs in a Blanket), and everyone's favorite treat (Dead Red Cupcakes). As a cookbook its not exactly revolutionary, but I really appreciated the commitment to the concept. The writers have curated a fun, accessible and indispensable collectible for die-hard fans.
