Martha's Halloween Handbook now available

It's no secret that Martha Stewart loves Halloween. Every other year or so, she publishes a magazine dedicated entirely to the dark holiday. Culled from the many articles of her Living magazine, the projects, recipes, and production values are above and beyond many others. This year's incarnation is a gorgeous 116-page "bookazine" printed on heavier stock, glossy paper for only $9.95. Though it features no new content collectors will surely not want to miss out. And just look at the wonderful cover with Martha as the Spellbinding Sorceress!

Want to hear a ghost story?

The first season of "My Ghost Story" on the BIO channel wraps up this week. The show is akin to people gathered around a campfire telling their true tales of ghostly encounters. Some are scarier than others but each is interesting in its own way. The show has been getting better with more images and locations being shown to really illustrate the tales. Last week, a guy who thought he was being possessed by a demon took a picture during an attack. Sure enough a horned apparition was caught on film. Eerie. Head over to the BIO channel's Paranormal Zone page for even more ghostly programming:

The Last Exorcism: Review

We are gearing up for a great season of Scary Movies with new releases scheduled almost every weekend until Halloween. This week's "The Last Exorcism" was a good "B" movie. Filmed in the ├╝ber-successful faux documentary style, the movie is at times funny, sad and eventually full of tension as the "is-she" or "isn't-she" question is answered. My major gripes are the ending, which jumps the shark following an otherwise tight psycho-drama-character piece AND that the scene pictured in the poster (sort of) never happens in the movie!

Piranha 3D: Review

I just got back from a screening of Piranha 3D and I am queasy and gleeful. That movie is such a throwback to the 80s creature features! It was about 40% ultimate gore, 50% naked girls, and 10% great acting (genuine wow). This definitely not for every (most?) tastes but it was a great time at the movies.

What the bloody hell?

The September 2nd issue of Rolling Stone features a ridiculously provocative cover featuring the three leads of True Blood, nekked and covered in blood! In the rare case that you are unfamiliar, True Blood is HBO's hot series about vampires living openly among humans in Louisiana. Simply one of the best horror-ific series of all time.

Yankee Candle gets in the spirit

With Illuminations stores now a faint memory, Yankee Candle has stepped up the Halloween offerings. This year's batch features a musically inspired "Boney Bunch" collection and a gothic "Haunted House" line which is definitely pushing the boundaries (for Yankee Candle's core demographic). Here are some of my favorites:

Pottery Barn goes grim

Pottery Barn is the first retailer out of the gate with Halloween merchandise. Among the large collection (online only right now) is this "Skeleton Hand Condiment Set" perfect for a boo-fet table or bar this Halloween. Check out the "Mini Skull Vase Filler" as well, which is quite grim for PB. To find, search for "Halloween" at www.potterybarn.com.
